I can confirm that Mladic is still in Serbia. I do not know Karadzic's exact whereabouts but it is certain that he is in the region, del Ponte said after meeting High Representative Christian Schwartz-Schilling for the first time since he took up office on January 31.
Del Ponte said that Karadzic's case proved that the exchange of intelligence information between the tribunal and international organisations operating in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the state bodies had to be improved in order to establish if the former Bosnian Serb leader was hiding in Bosnia or in Serbia and Montenegro.
Commenting on the failure to arrest the six remaining fugitives from the tribunal, del Ponte said that responsibility for that lay with the authorities in Belgrade and the Bosnian Serb entity.
High Representative Schwartz-Schilling said his office would give all the necessary support to the tribunal.
Del Ponte discussed the arrest of the remaining war crimes indictees with European Union Force and NATO commanders in Bosnia as well as with judges and prosecutors involved in war crimes trials.
