WASHINGTON, Feb 3 (Hina) - The United States has expressed disappointment at assistance which the Army of Serbia-Montenegro offered to the fugitive general Ratko Mladic, who is wanted by the UN war crimes tribunal.

On Wednesday the army of the state-union of Serbia-Montenegro admitted to having harboured runaway Mladic, the war-time Bosnian Serb leader accused of genocide.

The country's Supreme Defence Council on Wednesday held a session at which the head of the Army's Military Security Agency (VBA), Svetko Kovac, submitted a report which stated that Mladic had occasionally stayed in military facilities until June 2002.

The spokesman for the State Department, Sean McCormack, on Friday expressed disappointment to hear that the Serbian authorities had helped Mladic, although they had been aware of their obligations regarding the arrest and the transfer of the fugitive to the Hague-based UN tribunal.

Washington continues to call on Serbian leaders to intensify efforts and arrest and hand over Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic, another war crimes indictee, to the UN court in The Hague.

According to McCormack, the United States will withhold financial support to Serbia-Montenegro over its failure to apprehend Mladic and Karadzic.
