Josipovic reaffirms Croatia's commitment to Millennium Development Goals

Autor: mses
NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Hina) - Croatia is committed to the full implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and it invested considerable efforts and funds in their achievement in the last decade, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said in his speech at the United Nations' summit on those goals in New York on Monday.

At the 2000 Millennium Summit, world leaders undertook to eradicate poverty and hunger, combat AIDS, improve child and maternal health and work on environmental sustainability and on universal education.

The ongoing summit in New York should encourage efforts to accomplish the goals set at the gathering 10 years ago.

Josipovic said that the Millennium Development Goals should serve as the pillars for global development partnership in the 21st century.

Solidarity must become the pivotal rule of our behaviour at all levels, Josipovic said in his first speech in the United Nations since he stepped into office as Croatian President.

Croatia has so far prepared two reports on the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, and this year it has reviewed all what it has done so far in this field.

Despite difficulties, progress has been made, the Croatia head of state said.

Croatia is taking efforts to advance the MDGs at the national level, although there are difficulties in ensuring domestic and foreign sources of investments in educational, heath-care, environmental and employment projects, he said.

Expressing confidence that Croatia would soon become the 28th member of the European Union, he said that on its path of transformation, being guided by European ideals, Croatia has to date invested considerable efforts and funds in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals.

Josipovic just as other speakers at the summit, including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, assessed that the only partial and sporadic progress had been made in carrying out the Millennium Development Goals at the global level.

The three-day summit in New York brought together more than 140 heads of state or government and officials of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and of a score of other international organisations.
