Survey shows most employees don't see a future for themselves in Croatia

ZAGREB, Sept 19 (Hina) - Most employees in Croatia do not see a future in their country for themselves and their children and believe that they would be better off abroad, shows a survey conducted in August.

The survey covered 956 job-seekers aged 25-34, mostly from Zagreb and Zagreb County. Its results were published on the job search web portal posao.hr.

Fifty-six percent of the respondents said they did not see a future in Croatia for themselves and their children, and close to 75 percent believed they would have better living conditions abroad.

Almost all respondents, 95 percent, believed they would earn more if they lived abroad.

The most frequent reasons which prompt Croatians to look for a job abroad are the lack of jobs, nepotism, the lack of transparency in employment, and low salaries.

More than 60 percent of the respondents said they would accept a permanent job abroad if given a chance for a better salary, while 34 percent said they would accept such an option only temporarily.

As for the country where they would be willing to emigrate to for employment purposes, 58 percent said they would choose an EU country, 20 percent would choose the United States and Canada, and 16 percent would opt for Australia.

The survey also showed that more than one-quarter of the respondents believed that foreign workers in Croatia were paid better than domestic workers, while as many believed that foreign workers were in a worse position than domestic workers.
