President supports initiative for charter on national development until 2025

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, Sept 14 (Hina) - Croatian President Ivo Josipovic has supported an initiative launched by the National Competitiveness Council for adopting a charter on national development in the next 15 years.

Participants in a meeting of the President's Economic Council on Tuesday discussed problems regarding the state budget, warning that Croatia lacked short and long-term planning.

We adopt budgets in spurts, Josipovic said after the meeting, explaining that preparations for the adoption of the budget begin at the last minute.

Over recent years we have had many budget revisions, which shows that the planning was not good, he said.

Josipovic therefore called for adopting a National Development Charter containing guidelines for Croatia's development until 2025.

The document should be discussed by the parliament, the government, political parties and the public.

The president called for taking measures aimed at attracting foreign investments.

"Why would somebody come to Croatia to invest, if our tax system is discouraging," Josipovic said, calling for changes in the taxation area.

In addition, there are signals about tax evasion and about the grey economy accounting for 30 percent of the economy, he said.

The National Competitiveness Council's chairman, Ivica Mudrinic, said a meeting would be held with the government next week and later on with some political parties in connection with the draft charter on national development until 2025.

We expect broad support, Mudrinic said.
