ZAGREB, May 30 (Hina) - Please note that the headline and lead of HNA9225 "Croatia likely to open about ten chapters in June within EU membership talks" incorrectly state that Croatia is likely to open said number of policy chapters in the accession negotiations late next month.

Following is the corrected item:

In late June Croatia could have about a dozen policy chapters open in accession negotiations with the European Union, and most of the remaining ones for which Croatia has not been given benchmarks are expected to be opened during Portugal's EU presidency, the chief of the European Commission Delegation to Croatia, Vincent Degert, said in Zagreb on Wednesday.

The decision on that is up to EU countries and not the Commission, but we believe that a dozen chapters could have open status on June 26, Degert said at his regular press briefing at which he spoke about the status of Croatia's accession negotiations, upcoming visits by European officials, and the EC Delegation's activities in Croatia.

So far, Croatia has opened six policy chapters and two have been provisionally closed. Croatia has received no benchmarks for 22 policy chapters and received them for 10 chapters. A benchmark for one of those policy chapters, concerning integrated border management, has been met.

The majority of policy chapters without benchmarks are to be opened during the Portuguese presidency, the EC representative said.

Portugal will take over the EU presidency from Germany on 1 July.

Degert announced a visit by the European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Danuta Huebner, to Zagreb next Tuesday.

According to him, the talks which Huebner will hold with Croatia's officials, including Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, will focus on regional competitiveness, transport and environmental protection.
