Speaking of the importance of national parliaments, Mesic said that none of segments of the process of Europeisation did not leave the parliaments out of that process.
According to Mesic, now it is up to parliaments to adopt laws containing new values and consequently they are responsible for the making directions for the entire process of the development of society.
Joining in European processes, this region has faced these new values and also obligations that it has voluntarily accepted regarding the adoption of European standards, the Croatian head of state said.
I am glad to say that our own priorities are fully congruous with European ones, Mesic said citing reconciliation, tolerance and coexistence as well as the development of cooperation dialogue and harmonisation of positions as those priorities.
We are aware that Croatia's achievements also imply our obligation to responsibly cooperate in the adoption of European standards and values in our region, he said.
In this context Mesic described the SEECP as a political framework for regional cooperation and the new CEFTA (Central European Free Trade Agreement) as an economic framework.
Both frameworks are of particular importance for achieving goals that are in the interest not only of Croatia but also of a broader region as well as of the entire European continent.
To Europeise the region means to make it consistent with European standards, Mesic said, adding that to open borders and admit all countries from the region into the European Union would provide for a permanent peace and stability in the region.
However, this does not mean the simultaneous admission of all the countries from the region into the (EU) membership.
Europe has always been able to recognise and appreciate Croatia's efforts. I believe that through applying the principle of the individual accession, it will do the same for each future member-country, the Croatian president said.
