This street was named after Polish physician L. L. Zamenhof who created the international artificial language Esperanto. Zamenhof, a Jew, was born on 15 December 1859 in the Polish town of Bialystok, which was then a part of the Russian Empire (now in Poland), and died in Warsaw on 14 April 1917.
His children - one son and two daughters - were killed during the Holocaust.
Today's commemoration began with Croatian President Stjepan Mesic placing a wreath in Zamenhofova Street.
