BELGRADE, April 4 (Hina) - The Secretary-General of the Council of Europe has said that the Serbian government has excellently prepared for taking over the chairmanship of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers.

Upon the completion of his two-day visit to Belgrade on Wednesday, Terry Davis said the chairmanship would be an opportunity for Serbia to demonstrate its leadership capability.

Serbia is to take over a six-month rotating presidency of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers in early May.

Davis commended Serbia for having engaged the civil sector in preparations for the chairmanship.

As for the issue of Kosovo, the Council of Europe Secretary General reiterated that the solution of Kosovo's status would be important for Europe, for the world and for Serbia, but that the purpose of his visit to Belgrade was to see how preparations for Serbia's chairmanship over the said committee were proceeding.

He added that it would be good for Serbia to get a new government as soon as possible after the last parliamentary elections.

Davis expects Serbia's authorities to spare no effort to bring war crimes indictee Ratko Mladic to justice.

Earlier in the day, Davis met Serbia's President Boris Tadic.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the President, the Secretary General strongly supported Serbia's European and Euro-Atlantic future.

Tadic thanked Davis for the balanced position of the Council of Europe concerning the future status of Kosovo.

Tadic was quoted as saying that Serbia was committed to stability and peace in the region and that the independence of Kosovo was unacceptable.
