Presidency member insists on efficient probes in case of missing Croats

MOSTAR, March 8 (Hina) - The Croat member in Bosnia-Herzegovina's tripartite presidency has confirmed that he personally urged the country's judicial authorities to invest more efforts so as to establish what happened to Bosnian Croat General Vlado Santic, who went missing in the western town of Bihac in 1995.

Zeljko Komsic told the Herceg-Bosna radio station on Thursday that he had also called for a new investigation into the disappearance of 12 prominent local Croats in the central town of Bugojno who went missing during the Muslim Croat conflict in 1993-1994.

In relation to the case of Vlado Santic, who had the general's rank of the Croat Defence Council (HVO), Komsic said he had some information that a probe launched into this case was marked by "serious omissions" which was why it failed to give any results.

Since Santic's disappearance, other Croat officials from time to time have pointed the finger at General Atif Dudakovic who in 1995 was the commander of the Bosnian Army's Fifth Corps, with headquarters in Bihac.

Due to the disappearance of local Croats, Bosnian Croat war veterans' organisations have had a grudge against the appointment of Selmo Cikotic as defence minister in the new Bosnian government. They hold Cikotic responsible for this case as he was the commander of local Bosnian Army units in Bugojno when those 26 Croats were taken away from their homes and from a prison by army troops in the period from 1 to 12 October 1993. Since then they have been accounted for.
