ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - The editor-in-chief of the Croatian Television news department, Vladimir Roncevic, said at a session of the national broadcaster's Programmes Council on Thursday that the recent airing of a documentary on war crimes in the military port Lora in Split did not constitute a programme mistake, but he apologised to all who felt insulted by the film.

The debate on the documentary, authored by Nenad Puhovski and aired by the national television network on February 28, was opened by Council member Juraj Njavro, who said that the film equated guilt for the 1990s war, and demanded that the editor of the documentary department be dismissed.

Speaking on behalf of war veterans' associations, Njavro pointed to the timing of the broadcast, saying that at the time when the film was shown, the Supreme Court was only expected to deliver a final verdict in the case in which eight former police officers were sentenced to prison terms ranging from six to eight years for war crimes against civilians.

Roncevic said that the Supreme Court had been consulted before the film was shown and that the court's position was that the broadcast did not constitute pressure on the judiciary because the final verdict in the case had already been made, although it was not made public at the time.

The Programmes Council today failed to make any conclusions about the controversial documentary, but Council chairman Zdenko Ljevak said the debate would be continued at the next session, after all Council members had seen the film.
