Several scores of protesters, mainly women, marched from downtown Zagreb to the government and parliament headquarters in the old part of the capital. During the walk, they distributed leaflets warning about the deteriorated position of women on the labour market.
The protesters were prevented by the police to approach the parliament headquarters.
They warned that unemployment among women was higher than among men and that women receive lower salaries on the average.
On the occasion of Women's Day, Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor gave a reception in the government's headquarters.
Kosor spoke about problems such as domestic violence and discrimination against women.
Last year, Croatia joined in the Europe-wide campaign "Parliaments United in Combating Domestic Violence against Women". The campaign, initiated by the Council of Europe, is to last until March 8, 2008.
