ZAGREB, Feb 12 (Hina) - The International Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA) has given Croatia a donation consisting of equipment for detection of nuclear and other radioactive substances that was installed at the Bregana border crossing, on the border with Slovenia, to prevent possible terrorist actions and smuggling, the head of the State Institute for Nuclear Safety, Matjaz Prah, said on Monday.

The equipment, consisting of two sets of portal monitors, will be put into operation on Tuesday by the head of the Europe Department of the IAEA's Department for Technical Cooperation, B.K. Kim.

This is one of the completed projects sponsored by the IAEA as part of intensive technical cooperation with Croatia, Kim said, recalling that Croatia became a member of the Vienna-based agency in 1993.

Kim was heading an IAEA delegation on a three-day visit to Croatia. The delegation today met officials of the State Institute for Nuclear Safety to discuss technical cooperation.

Kim said that the main priority of cooperation projects with Croatia was nuclear safety and helping Croatia build infrastructure for nuclear safety and protection against radiation. Also important are projects in the field of nuclear medicine and oncology, he added.

In the 2005/2006 period, the IAEA sponsored Croatia or granted it donations worth around USD900,000 for six different projects related to the use of radioactive sources in medicine and nuclear technologies in discovering underground water and determining water quality.

The new cycle for 2007/2008 consists of five projects, of which four are new and relate to the use of nuclear technologies in medicine and science and research. The fifth project, which was transferred from the previous cycle, relates to protection against radiation, Prah said.
