The police said in a statement that another 13 persons were arrested and that 80 persons were injured in clashes between the demonstrators and the police, including eight officers. Twelve persons sustained serious injuries.
The protest became violent when the demonstrators tried to enter the government building. They threw stones at police, who used tear gas to disperse them and prevent them from entering the building, the statement said.
International police commissioner Steven Curtis said the demonstrators' attempt to enter the government building led to an unnecessary conflict and that it was probably a provocation conceived by the organisers of the demonstrations.
After the demonstration, Kurti accused the police of violence.
The Kosovo government said the police had acted correctly.
