RIJEKA, Feb 3 (Hina) - Representatives of port workers' trade unions from Germany, Italy, Romania and Croatia have gathered in the northern Adriatic port of Rijeka for their first preparatory meeting on a project aimed at establishing a Europe-wide workers' council in this sector.

The meeting, which started on Friday, is discussing principles of future work on establishing a joint workers' council and the role of each trade union involved in the process, Croatian Port Workers' Trade Union leader Roberto Zubcic said at a press conference on Saturday.

Zubcic said that an increasing number of employers in ports were multinational companies that operated in a similar way, and that trade unions and workers' councils could no longer negotiate with the employers on an equal footing, which was why it was necessary to internationalise the role of a joint workers' council.

The trade union leader said he was pleased that Croatia was involved in the project although it was not a member of the European Union.

For now only the port workers' unions from the four countries are involved in the initiative and trade unions from other European countries have been invited to join.

A final document on establishing a port workers' council is due to be adopted in October.
