BELGRADE, Jan 17 (Hina) - Kosovo is obviously an obstacle to Serbia on its path to the European Union, because the EU does not want to import an unresolved conflict, US Ambassador to Belgrade Michael Polt said in a newspaper interview published on Wednesday.

If you don't resolve the conflict between Belgrade and Pristina, Kosovo will not be moving towards the EU and neither will Serbia, Polt said in an interview with Politika daily, adding that the people of Kosovo had the right to know about their future.

Milosevic's actions in Kosovo and what his forces did there resulted in the situation we have today and which must be resolved, the US ambassador said, stressing that the Kosovo problem originated with the late Serbian leader and his regime.

If Serbia had had a government that did not commit crimes but cared about the rights of its citizens regardless of their ethnic background, the international community would not have interfered, he added.

We all would have liked it if Yugoslavia could have survived, democratic, free and united. Today it would have been a successful member of the EU. That was the principled position of US policy. It's what we wanted, but it didn't happen. Not because of the international community, but because of the violent disintegration of Yugoslavia. The international community intervened to prevent further bloodshed and is now seeking a solution. Not everyone will be happy with decisions that will be made, but we are certainly working to make Europe united and free. I am confident that Serbia will be part of that Europe, Polt said.

During his visit to Bujanovac in southern Serbia on Wednesday, the US ambassador called on the local Albanian community to participate in parliamentary elections scheduled for January 21.
