Montenegro to offer citizenship for investments starting from EUR 500,000

Autor: mses
PODGORICA, Aug 10 (Hina) - The Montenegrin government has launched an economic citizenship programme for providing Montenegrin citizenship to foreign investors in return for their investments, the government stated in Podgorica on Tuesday.

Prominent business people will be able to acquire the citizenship of this southeast European country in the event of their investments into the local economy or donations to the state budget.

The minimum requirement is an investment of EUR 500,000, with a part of this sum being paid directly to the state budget.

The aim of this programme is to encourage most successful business people in the fworld to transfer the headquarters of their companies to Montenegro and bring their know-how and technologies.

The opposition, however, criticises this programme, explaining that it may attract tycoons and corrupt politicians who are trying to be beyond the reach of their countries' judicial systems.

Montenegro declared its independence from the union with Serbia on 3 June 2006.
