ZAGREB, April 23 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Thursday decided to transform the national institute for the maintenance and overhaul of military planes (Zrakoplovno-tehnicki zavod) into a company so that it could maintain and overhaul civilian planes besides planes of the national air force.

The government sent to the parliament draft amendments to legislation regulating service in the armed forces, stipulating that the upper age limit for the start of service for commissioned officers should be changed from 25 to 30 years of age, and that the age limit for the start of service of noncommissioned officers should be removed, making it possible for professional soldiers to apply for noncommissioned ranks until the expiry of their second contract on service.

The Ivo Sanader cabinet also proposed changes to the law on museums and archives making it possible for foreign nationals to establish museums and specialised and private archives in Croatia upon Croatia's admission to the European Union.

The government endorsed a report on the business performance of the fund of the Croatian Homeland Defence War veterans and their families in 2008.

At the end of 2008, the fund's assets were HRK 2.4 billion.
