ZAGREB, June 23 (Hina) - Farmer leaders said on Tuesday that they would persist in the purchase price of HRK1.25 per kilo of wheat and that the hoped that they would hold successful negotiations with government officials later in the day.

Addressing the press after their talks with President Stjepan Mesic on Tuesday morning, several representatives of Croatian farmers' associations called on reporters to cover their meeting with the government later in the day.

"We insist on HRK 1.25 as we hold that it is economically justifiable and we will not give up," said Mato Mlinaric.

Another farmer leader said that cheap wheat had not lead to cheap bread.

We insist on the protection of villages and family-run farms and on seeing to it that citizens are provided with high-quality, healthy and ecologically acceptable products, said Slavko Novakovic.

He went on to say that President Stjepan Mesic had expressed his willingness to help villages and family-run farms to overcome the ongoing financial and economic crunch.

Asked by reporters how the president Mesic could concretely help them, Novakovic answered that he could help in the implementation of safeguarding measures in the agriculture.

Last week's negotiations between crop growers and government officials on wheat price ended inconclusively with the two sides agreeing that they would resume the talks on 23 June.

Crop growers insist on the minimum purchase price of HRK 1.25 per kilo of wheat and of HRK 2.50 per kilo of oil rape.
