ZAGREB, Feb 11 (Hina) - Tourists visiting Croatia last year spent an average of 79 euros a day, which is 19% or about 13 euros more than in 2016, according to the findings of the TOMAS survey by the Zagreb-based Institute of Tourism.

The results of the survey were presented recently in the Tourism Ministry, the 10th such survey conducted by the Institute with the assistance of Croatia's national and county tourist boards.

The survey was carried out  between July and October on a sample of almost 6,000 domestic and foreign guests from 18 countries in 67 destinations on the Adriatic.

The results show that broken down by type of accommodation, hotel guests spent the most (122 euros).

Broken down by country which they came, tourists from the US spent the most (160 euros) followed by Brits (140 euros), and Spaniards (126 euros).

Germans, who account for the most numerous tourists in Croatia, spent 75 euros a day on average.

Of the average daily spending of 79 euros, most of that was spent on accommodation (40 euros) followed by food and beverages outside accommodation (13 euros) and for shopping (12 euros).

Most respondents, (64%) considered that the cost of holidaying in Croatia was in line with what they expected, while 25% said the costs were higher than expected.

The survey showed that Croatia managed to attract a larger number of tourists visiting it for the first time (32.5%) compared to 18% recorded in 2014. However, a high percentage of tourists (27%) are frequent visitors to Croatia, visiting six or more times.
