Author: Ivana Tomičić Šušak

ZAGREB, Nov 4 (Hina) - International Romani Language Day that Croatia has been observing for the past eight years was marked in the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb on Friday in the presence of numerous politicians, church dignitaries, culture and education officials and public figures.

The ceremony was also attended by President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, who sponsored the event, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and Deputy Parliament Speaker  Zeljko Reiner, who all supported the Roma community.

"Year after year, International Romani Language Day meant a new opportunity to make a balance of the success achieved and to give guidelines for the future affirmation of the Romani language and culture in Croatia and elsewhere," Grabar-Kitarovic said.

The president said the inclusion of the Roma youth in the education system was critical, stressing that this would help affirmation of the Romani language and culture.

PM Plenkovic expressed satisfaction with the fact that his government had the support of and excellent cooperation with all eight ethnic minority deputies in the Croatian parliament who are their partners in the parliamentary majority.

He announced that promoting the current level of ethnic minority rights was one of the priorities in his government's platform, adding that the operational programme for individual ethnic minorities, including the Roma minority, would be drafted by the end of the year.

Deputy Speaker Reiner welcomed the efforts to preserve the Romani language so that young generations could continue to pass on their rich heritage.

Roma MP Veljko Kajtazi said the presence of its representatives in the executive and judicial branches of the government gave the Roma Community hope that significant progress would be made in the coming period regarding their position in society.

"This gave us the optimism that we need, given the disastrous position the Roma are in ", Kajtazi said.

The event was also addressed by the president of the International Romani Union, Stanislaw Stankiewicz, who presented deserving individuals with diplomas for successful cooperation.
