Author: Roberta Mlinarić

ZAGREB, Oct 21 (Hina) - The shipyard "Viktor Lenac" from Rijeka, one of the biggest overhaul, conversion and offshore platform construction shipyards in the Mediterranean, marked the 120th anniversary of its establishment at a ceremony held on Thursday.

President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic's envoy Heri Bezic said that Viktor Lenac was a world renowned shipyard and that the Croatian shipbuilding industry met international standards in terms of its infrastructure.

The shipyard's CEO, Aljosa Pavelin, said that companies with such a long tradition were rare, congratulating also the Pula-based Uljanik shipyard, which this year marks the 160th anniversary of its establishment.

Pavelin said that Viktor Lenac's revenues had been growing steadily over the past five years, that 98% of those revenues came from abroad, and that the shipyard was ranked 25th on a list of Croatia's best exporters.

The shipyard employs 485 workers and as many subcontractors. It has three docks, one of which can take in vessels with a carrying capacity of up to 160,000 tonnes. It has more than 1,000 metres of berths, 7 coastal cranes and a construction site for offshore platforms and it can carry out the most complex projects in line with international standards.

Established under the name Lazarus, the shipyard got its current name in 1948 in honour of its worker, World War II hero Viktor Lenac.

Its majority owners are the Zadar-based Tankerska Plovidba shipping company and Uljanik.

Attending the ceremony were, among other guests, representatives of the Russian and USA embassies in Croatia.
