Figures compiled from tax returns for the period from January to October show that 6,072 legal entities with 21,439 employees and 1,228 natural persons employing 3,571 workers did not pay wages to their employees for three consecutive months during that time.
Workers not paid their overdue wages were called upon to report their employers to the Tax Authority, which would then look into each complaint and update its list of wage defaulters. Publication of such a list is provided for under the Income Tax Act.
The first list of wage defaulters was made public on the Tax Authority's website last July, containing the names of 7,038 employers.
