Since it issued a public appeal for help to refugees, the HCK has raised HRK 1.6 million, of which HRK 1.3 has been paid into a donation account and HRK 300,000 via a donation phone line. So far, HRK 764,000 has been spent to buy humanitarian aid.
HCK executive director Robert Markt said that up to 155 people had been deployed by the HCK to assist refugees on a daily basis. Those people have coordinated work with humanitarian organisations, Markt said, adding that buffer stock assistance was functioning flawlessly.
Refugees have been given 20,000 raincoats, 90,000 blankets and 195 first aid kits, while 20 teams have been engaged to provide psycho-social assistance.
"We are particularly proud about our search service which has reunited 200 families that approached us for help, looking for their fathers, brothers or children," Markt stressed.
The number of refugees passing daily through the Opatovac refugee reception centre in eastern Croatia ranges from 4,000 to 7,000. The HCK uses information from their colleagues in Macedonia as an indicator of how many refugees could be expected to arrive in the country in the next two to three days.
HCK president Josip Jelic said that the coordination of all institutions involved in providing humanitarian assistance to refugees had been excellent. He also commended the positive attitude of the media to refugees, saying that almost none of the media outlets had fomented xenophobia and social exclusion.
