KARLOVAC, July 8
(Hina) - A construction site was opened on
Wednesday on the right bank of the Korana river at Gornje Mekusje near
Karlovac where, over the next year, a HRK 36.6 million (approx. EUR
4.82m) freshwater aquarium and river museum, called Kaquarium,
expected to become a big tourist attraction, will be built.
Thanks to financing from the European Regional Development Plan, ten large and a series of smaller pools with 150 European freshwater fish species will be built.
Karlovac County head Ivan Vucic said the Kaquarium was part of the county's development strategy and that the project drew HRK 36 million from European Union funds. He said it would become a big tourist attraction.
Karlovac Mayor Damir Jelic hoped the Kaquarium would highlight Karlovac "as an open city, a city of encounters."
