Croatia gets first theatre hall adjusted to needs of people with disabilities

Author: rmli
ZAGREB, Dec 3 (Hina) - Zagreb's "Vidra" theatre is the first theatre in Croatia fully adjusted to all categories of disabled people and its latest technical adjustments were presented on Wednesday, on International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The theatre now has a mobile loading platform for people in wheelchairs as well as a tactile paving leading blind persons through the theatre's lobby to the hall. All seats in the hall are marked in Braille.

The head of the satirical theatre "Kerempuh" and the "Vidra" theatre, Dusko Ljustina, said that all theatres in the country should be adjusted to the needs of people with disabilities and that next year these changes would be introduced in Kerempuh as well.

The director of the "Novi zivot" theatre for the blind and visually impaired, Vojin Peric, said that social policies should start treating persons with disabilities as creative people and not just mere consumers of social services.

"They create and use cultural products, but they cannot access theatre halls... which they should be enabled to do," he said, adding that audio description was yet to be introduced at Vidra.

Assistant Minister of Social Policy and Youth Iva Prpic said that there were 500,000 persons with disabilities in Croatia.

Vladimir Stojsavljevic, an assistant at the Culture Ministry, which financially supported the project, said the ministry was doing its best to support similar projects in line with its financial potential.
