During the 13-year-long project, led by Edith Mühlgaszner, dialects spoken by the ethnic Croatian minority in Burgenland and in the neighbouring parts of Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia were recorded and analysed, and the findings were presented in five books.
Burgenland Croatian is a regional variety of the Chakavian dialect of Croatian spoken in Austria, Hungary, Czechia, and Slovakia. Burgenland Croatian is recognised as a minority language in the Austrian state of Burgenland.
Mühlgaszner, the author of the project, said that this was the first cross-border project of this kind.
HKDC president Martin Ivancsics said that having in mind the constant change of languages and their exposure to the influences of other languages, the purpose of this project was to establish what was left of Burgenland Croatian and what it looks like today.
Project associate Anita Celinić said the findings of the project are also an obligation to continue this kind of research.
