Only 1/3 Croat students hope to find appropriate job after graduation

ZAGREB, March 15 (Hina) - Of 1,330 students covered by an opinion poll, as many as two thirds do not believe that they will be employed in the field for which they have been educated after they graduate, and only a third is hopeful of getting a job for which they have been educated.

The opinion poll has been conducted by the Studentski.hr web portal in cooperation with the Croatian Postal Bank and the "Financijski Klub" undergraduates' association.

Every other respondent (48%) is ready to accept any job offered to them, and 12% of those polled say they will continue education upon graduating from the college they are currently attending.

Broken down by type of college and faculty, those enrolled in technical faculties are most pessimistic, with only 7% of them expecting to find a job for which they have been educated, while as many as 82% of those attending faculties of economics and business believe that they will find the appropriate job immediately after graduation.

Professor Mirjana Ivanov, who teaches at the Zagreb University Faculty of Economics, has said that the pessimism of the former group of students is due to a dire situation in the industry, notably in the construction sector.

Professor Ivanov calls for improvement of communication and cooperation between the Croatian Employment Service and the education system, notably in counselling high school seniors about their future careers.

As for the financial situation of undergraduates, over 50% of Croatian students have HRK 500 per month at their disposal, excluding food and accommodation costs.

As many as 39% of those polled live in rented flats, 34% live with their parents and 27% in dormitories.

Students mainly pay in cash (81%), and only 9% use credit cards, while 10% use the Internet and smart phones for financial transactions.
