Government approves EUR 6.3 mln for marriage referendum

ZAGREB, Nov 21 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Thursday approved earmarking HRK 48 million from the budget reserves for the holding of a state referendum on a constitutional definition of marriage.

The referendum will take place on December 1 at the request of the "In the Name of the Family" civil initiative which collected more than 750,000 signatures for a referendum at which citizens will decide if the Constitution will define marriage as a heterosexual union.

Since the State Election Commission could not plan funds for such an action in its financial plan for this year, the government approved the HRK 48 million.

The government also decided to help the Philippines with HRK 380,000 in the wake of the November 8 typhoon Haiyan which is believed to have killed 10,000 people.

Croatia will also give Bulgaria HRK 30,000 for dealing with the increasing number of Syrian refugees.

The government provided collateral to the Croatian Railways Cargo company to roll over a long term loan in the amount of HRK 63 million.

Since parliament's decision on the participation of Croatian troops in UN peace missions expires on December 31, the government forwarded to parliament, with the consent of President and Supreme Commander Ivo Josipovic, a draft decision on their involvement in those missions in the period from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2015.

Up to ten Croatian troops would take part in the UNMOGIP mission to India and Pakistan, up to eight in MINURSO in Western Sahara, up to five in UNFIL in the Lebanon and UNMISS in South Sudan, and up to two in UNMIL in Liberia and UNFICYP in Cyprus.
