Turnout in local elections by 11am 13.55 pct

ZAGREB, May 19 (Hina) - Nearly half a million eligible Croatian voters, or 13.55 per cent, voted in Sunday's local elections by 11 a.m., the State Election Commission (DIP) said.

The turnout by 11 a.m. at the last local elections four years ago was 13.73%, said DIP president Branko Hrvatin.

Broken down by city, the biggest turnout by 11 a.m. today was in Sisak (15.76%) and the lowest in Rijeka (8.73%). The turnout in Zagreb was 13.57%.

Broken down by county, the biggest turnout was in Varazdin County (15.52%).

Hrvatin expects the turnout to exceed 50% by the time polling stations close at 7 p.m.

He said there were no major objections to the voting.

Observers of the GONG election monitoring NGO also reported only a minor number of violations, mainly by voters who said the electioneering ban was not being respected and that they were being told who to vote for.

GONG urged candidates to refrain from pressuring voters and promotion on social networks.
