Parliament speaker votes in local elections

ZAGREB, May 19 (Hina) - After casting his ballot in Sunday's local elections, Parliament Speaker Josip Leko told reporters in Zagreb he hoped the turnout would be big, given that local policy had the most important impact on citizens' lives.

"Of all policies, local policy is the most important, having the most direct impact on the life of a community," he said.

"I think it's very important that citizens recognise that, that as many as possible go to the polls and participate, decide, create their future, at least for the next four years."

Leko was hopeful the turnout would be considerably higher than in last month's election for the European Parliament, saying citizens' interest in local elections was considerably "closer to man."

Asked if he was satisfied with the election campaign, Leko said high democratic standards were respected despite a few "deviations."

"I can be very satisfied with the tolerance and democratic values shown in the campaign. Croatia's democracy was indeed proven in action."
