RTRS-Australian wool indicator rises 5c to 562c/kg
SYDNEY, Oct 16 (Reuter) - The Australian eastern wool market
indicator rose a further five cents to 562 cents a kg clean at
sales in Goulburn and Adelaide on Wednesday, Wool International
(WI) said.
In a firmer merino fleece market, 19 micron was slightly
dearer, 20m 0.5 percent dearer, 21/24/25m were 1.5 percent
dearer and 22/23/26m were 1.0 percent dearer.
In merino skirtings, 19m was generally unchanged and 20/21m
slightly dearer.
In crossbreds, 27/28/29m were 0.5 percent dearer, 30m
slightly dearer and 31m 1.0 percent cheaper.
In cardings, lambs were 3.0 percent cheaper and locks and
crutchings were generally unchanged.
WI said Japanese and Chinese interests were principal buyers
with good support from local mills and most other sectors.
Of 22,911 bales offered in both centres, 7.3 percent were
passed in.
Sales continue on Thursday in Goulburn, Adelaide and
Fremantle, with about 34,600 bales to be offered.

Bradford wool market weak but optimistic
BRADFORD, Oct 14 (Reuter) - Tops prices were largely
unchanged in marginally firmer demand but developments in the
retail sector brought renewed optimism to the Bradford wool
market, trade sources said on Monday.
Selected finer merinos saw slight price improvements and
some topmakers had new orders to report, they added.
"After a disappointing September and the sharp price fall
for finer merinos in October which made buyers hold back, even
(this) modest improvement is encouraging," one said.
Last week's announcement of the 5.2 percent rise in
August-September retail clothing prices (the sharpest since
1947) appeared to have little immediate impact on the market as
only a limited improvement in buying interest was seen, trade
sources said.
Some said the pick-up in retail prices could simply indicate
an end to the trend in discounting and the start of the new
fashion season.
But others were optimistic that this could still filter down
to tops suppliers and bring a willingness from retailers to pay
higher prices.
Some sources said that with prices unseasonably weak, buyers
could yet take the opportunity to buy forward.
News that a major high street retailer was urging its
contracted manufacturers to pay their own suppliers on time also
brought cheer to a textile industry where late payment has been
endemic, sources said.
