LONDON (DOW JONES)--BASE METALS PRICES WERE HIGHER AT WEDNESDAY'S OFFICIAL CLOSE ON THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE ON AN EARLIER FLURRY OF CHART- DRIVEN BUYING AND END-OF-YEAR SHORT COVERING, DEALERS SAID. BUT UNDERLYING SENTIMENT REMAINS BEARISH. IN CONTRAST TO THEIR EARLY-1997 STRENGTH, METALS PRICES WILL LIMP INTO 1998, BURDENED BY GROWING ANXIETY ABOUT SLOWING ASIAN DEMAND, ANALYSTS SAID. THE LME CLOSES AT 1330 GMT FOR THE NEW YEAR HOLIDAY. (LME THREE-MONTH OFFICIAL PRICES IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON, WITH PREVIOUS OFFICIAL CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. ALUMINUM, BUOYED BY SHORT COVERING LATE THURSDAY, HELD STEADY IN THE RINGS BUT NEVER LOOKED LIKE RE-TESTING RESISTANCE AT $1,570 AS ACTIVITY WOUND DOWN. LME BROKER RUDOLF WOLFF & CO. UNDERSCORED WORRIES ABOUT THE IMPACT OF ASIA'S RECENT ECONOMIC TURMOIL ON METALS DEMAND WITH A DOWNGRADE OF ITS 1998 LME PRICE FORECASTS. IT ORIGINALLY MADE THE FORECASTS IN OCTOBER. WOLFF ANALYSTS SAID THEY EXPECTED METALS PRICES TO "START 1998 UNDER PRESSURE, AS THE ASIAN TURMOIL CONTINUES TO DOMINATE MARKET SENTIMENT". "THERE IS NOW MOUNTING CONCERN THAT THE ECONOMIES OF CHINA AND JAPAN WILL FALL FOUL OF THE CREDIT SQUEEZE (IN ASIA)," WOLFF ADDED IN A NOTE TO CLIENTS. 311502 MET dec 97
