However, steady scale-up selling by the trade capped gains, preventing the December contract from testing chart resistance at 72.50 cents per lb and prompting locals to liquidate their long positions, they added. "The trade was on both sides," said one floor trader. "It was mostly trade all day." Benchmark December cotton rose to a intra-day high of 72.44 cents per lb, but settled with pared gains at 72.05 cents, up 0.37 cent. The low was 71.75 cents. The rest of the board ended up 0.15 to 0.31 cent. Cotton prices rose at the open on Thursday, as sentiment was aided by better-than-anticipated weekly exports. USDA's weekly export and sales report released this morning showed new sales in the week ended October 23 came in at 266,100 running bales -- surpassing expectations of some 100,000 to 150,000 bales. USDA also reported Upland sales of 265,000 running bales were 42 percent above the prior week and one-third above the 4-week average. Exports of 72,200 RB advanced 21 percent from the prior week's marketing year low and were 4 percent above the 4-week average, the department said. But some traders said the bullish sentiment brought on by the export numbers was tempered by ongoing fears the economic situation in Asia would weaken demand for U.S. cotton. In Hong Kong on Thursday, the Hang Seng Index closed down 3.74 percent, or 402.44 points, at 10,362.86, while Japan's Nikkei-225 index fell 2.92 percent, or 492.10 points, to close at 16,364.94. "The exports were excellent," said a trader. "But the impact of what's happening over in Asia is going to impact demand. We're still trying to digest what it's going to do to our exports down the road." On the charts, traders said December continued to face resistance at 72.50 cents, then 73.00 cents. Strong support was seen near 71.00 cents, followed by 70.80 cents, its life-of-contract low. Traders said brisk switch activity pushed turnover up to an estimated 14,000 lots on Thursday -- nearly double Wednesday's offical total of 7,384 lots. 311049 MET oct 97
