An underlying mill demand was discernible, principally for supplies required during the first quarter of next year. However, divergent price ideas often rendered the conclusion of business impracticable. Most mill buyers continued to foresee a decline of upland offering rates as harvest pressures build, whereas the trade has proved reluctant to discount offers until more tangible signs of weakness are discernible at the various origins in question. Although some modest further business was under discussion in selected African and Mediterranean styles, the volume of actual sales was probably small, traders said. 311049 MET oct 97
