A bout of speculative short-covering erased morning losses and drove the benchmark December contract to a peak of 73.83 cents per lb before the upside ran out of steam. December cotton finished at 73.57 cents, up 0.14 cent on the day and off the low hit in the morning of 73.21 cents. The rest of the board finished up 0.15 to down 0.02 cent. Cotton futures headed lower from the outset on Tuesday as the trade came in selling following Monday's weak finish, dealers said. December breached chart support at Monday's low of 73.35 cents, but a lack of follow-through to the downside prompted some speculators to cover their short positions, they said. Allendale Commodities analyst Jim Cordier viewed today's firmer close as part of an ongoing consolidation to the market's recent slide to life-of-contract lows. "Cotton is still alleviating the oversold position we've had in the past couple of weeks," he said. But he added the market remained in a technical downtrend amid the prospect ample supply. "The charts look negative and stocks are plentiful," Cordier said. "I would not be surprised to see 70 or 69-cent cotton." On the charts, traders pegged December support at 73.00 cents, while resistance was seen near 74.00 cents and then 74.25 cents. Traders await NYCE's weekly spec/hedge report due Wednesday ahead of the opening. They expect the data to show a decline in the speculative net short position compared with a 24.6 percent net short position last week. "I expect the spec/hedge report to show the spec short position narrowed in a bit," said one trader. Some traders estimated the report would show speculators were still net short some 15 to 16 percent. Volume on the day reached an estimated 12,000 lots, up from Monday's official tally of 7,985 lots. 171035 MET sep 97
