But options-related buying sparked an afternoon bout of short-covering, lifting prices off session lows, they said. Benchmark December cotton fell 0.22 cent per lb on the day, to 72.90 cents, after ranging between 72.95 and 72.86 cents. The rest of the board ended down 0.23 to up 0.08 cent. Traders said market participants continued to focus on adjusting positions ahead of the USDA's monthly supply/demand report slated for release on Friday. They said an expected increase in the USDA's projection for the 1997/98 U.S. crop -- which was pegged 17.8 million bales in the USDA August report -- has dampened sentiment. "Everyone's just waiting for the report," said one trader. "They are discounting a crop of about 18 million." "I have heard estimates from 17.7 to 18.4 million," he added. "I think it will come in at about 18.2 or 18.3 million. Supporting views of improved production, USDA reported after Monday's close that 60 percent of the U.S. cotton crop is in good to excellent condition, unchanged from last week. Some traders said the latest spec/hedge report released before today's opening may have cast a bearish tone. NYCE reported speculators had slightly decreased their net short position to 24.6 percent from a 25.5 percent net short position a week ago. Most traders had expected the report to show a modest increase in speculative shorts. Technically, December support was seen at its life-of-contract low of 72.30 cents. On the upside, resistance was pegged at last Wednesday's high of 73.73 cents, followed by 74.00 cents. Volume was fairly light at an estimated 6,000 lots, down from Monday's official tally of 6,291 lots. 101114 MET sep 97
