THE PRICE WAS FURTHER ERODED BY AN INCREASE IN THE LME WAREHOUSE STOCKS, AFTER A LONG SPATE OF DRAWDOWNS, DESPITE THE LONGSTANDING BACKWARDATION. ALUMINUM AND COPPER WERE MARKED A TOUCH DOWN, WHICH TRADERS RELATED TO THE ZINC DROP. (LME THREE-MONTH PRICES IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON AT 0940 GMT, WITH THURSDAY'S LATE KERB CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. THURSDAY'S NYMEX COPPER CLOSE IS IN CENTS A POUND.) COPPER 2,242.50 (2,147.50) ZINC 1,482 (1,504.50) ALUMINUM 1,626.50 (1,636.50) TIN 5,400 (5,415) NICKEL 6,607.50 (6,560) LEAD 639.50 (643.50) IN SLOW TRADING, THE ZINC SPREADS PROVIDED THE FOCUS, TRADERS AND ANALYSTS SAID. THE CASH-TO-THREE-MONTH BACKWARDATION EASED BY $30 FROM THURSDAY'S CLOSE, TRADING AT $125 TO $135 A TON AT 0954 GMT. ACCORDING TO A TRADER WITH A FRENCH-OWNED BROKERAGE, PARTICIPANTS ARE ANTICIPATING A MOVE TO LIMIT ZINC'S BACKWARDATION, FOLLOWING A SIMILAR MOVE IN THE ALUMINUM MARKET WEDNESDAY. 'PEOPLE ARE ANTICIPATING THAT THE SQUEEZE DAYS ARE OVER,' THE TRADER SAID. 'THIS AFFECTS THE GENERAL MOOD, AND PEOPLE WHO ARE HOLDING METAL ARE LETTING IT GO A LITTLE.' HOWEVER, ANALYSTS ARGUED THAT THE EXCHANGE ISN'T LIKELY TO STEP IN UNTIL IN LATE SEPTEMBER, WHEN THE TIGHTEST DATES ARE TRADED. UNLIKE IN THE ALUMINUM MARKET, TIGHTNESS IN ZINC IS SPREAD OUT WITHIN SEVERAL MONTHS, THEY SAY. THE ZINC STOCKS WERE UP 1,075 TONS TO 378,400 TONS. 'PEOPLE THINK THAT NOW IS THE TIME TO GET IT IN,' THE TRADER WITH THE FRENCH-OWNED BROKERAGE SAID, REFERRING TO AN EXPECTATION OF NARROWING SPREADS. COPPER WAS LITTLE CHANGED, AND ALUMINUM JUST $10 LOWER FROM THURSDAY'S CLOSE. 'COPPER IS DOING NOTHING SIGNIFICANT, AND ALUMINUM TENDS TO THE BED FELLOW OF ZINC,' THE TRADER SAID. 291501 MET aug 97
