But with nearby backwardations remaining wide traders expected further prices swings over the coming days. "We are in the eye of the storm at the moment...there is more stormy weather to come in the zinc market," one LME zinc trader said. By the close of morning business three months delivery zinc was trading at $1,529 a tonne, against Tuesday's LME kerb close of $1,480. The cash to three months backwardation was indicated at $100/$115, versus Tuesday's $70. Traders said concerns over the backwardation, falling LME stocks and the Chinese smelter short position should keep the market nervous. Chinese officials said some smelters remained short, but overall production capacity was enough to cover them. Chief Executive, David King, said on Wednesday that the LME was monitoring the zinc market given its recent tighness. King explained that as usual the LME was watching all markets. "A number of tight markets of late are being watched," King said. Zinc, copper and aluminim are currently showing backwardations for cash to three months. Asked by Reuters if the LME has considered intervening in the zinc market King made no comment. On Monday zinc raced to a seven-year high of $1,675 only to subsequently crash back by around 20 percent. Elsewhere, aluminium registered a 19-month high of $1,716 on the back of fund buying and short-covering. Tight nearby spreads were underpinning the move which was finding forward selling. Traders said they expected renewed fund interest from the U.S. in later trading. They pegged resistance at $1,725 and $1,750. Last business was at $1,711 up $11. Nickel raced higher on short-covering, hitting a two-month peak of $7,580. It slipped back to last trade at $7,505, up $10. Traders said the market was approaching overbought levels but was finding support from labour talks at Canada's Falconbrige on a contract that expires on Friday. Copper traded in a narrow range and was last at $2,353, down $6. Traders are expecting a period of consolidation. Trade buying and a pickup in chart signals continued to lift tin out of its oversold condition. It was last at $5,560, versus $5,410. Lead settled quietly at $632, down $3.
