Conditions were fairly active during the open-outcry sessions, reflecting the interest in the spreads, although there was less fund involvement overall, they added. Copper made steady upside progress through the morning, paying little heed to a 1,750-tonne stock increase. Although inventories are expected to continue rising in the short-term, tonnages may well be smaller. Meanwhile, the cash/threes spread moved out to a $13/15 backwardation from Wednesday's $3/5 premium and compared with the small contangos seen early in the week. Traders said forwards are tightening up, particularly Sept/Oct and Oct/Nov where a backwardation of $22 is in place, against $14 yesterday after some bank borrowing interest. Three months prices stalled near $2,200, although last kerb trade was at $2,191, up $14 from Wednesday's kerb. Zinc prices were momentarily knocked by a 3,675-tonne stock rise, with 3,950 tonnes of Chinese metal delivered into Singapore. But the ongong tightness in Sept and signs of the Oct date tightening also overrode this. The full cash/threes backwardation was over $180, while Sept/Oct was at $73. Three months prices were unable to hold $1,500, and ended the morning at $1,498, down $6 from yesterday. Aluminium was another market where a big stock increase tended to be overshadowed by tightness. Stocks rise 14,425 tonnes, consistent with recent talk of large increases. Both "tom/next" and cash/one day traded at sizeable premiums. The firmer was at $15 backwardation, while cash/day was between $12 and $14. Cash/Sept remained tight at $55. Last forward business was at $1,646, up $14. Lead skipped higher on some fund buying and buy-stops after the $610 level was cleared, although business was fairly thin. Prices were $13 higher at $621. Nickel reversed direction after this week's technical rally petered out. It ended the session at $6,740, down $60.
