Most of the other metals chalked up gains with copper, but lead woke from its recent slumber and charged higher. Three month copper prices touched a peak of $2,516, up $23 from Tuesday's kerb close, but after a brief flurry early on the pre-market, turnover was moderate during official trading. It ended the morning kerb at $2,307. "At the moment, I don't think we have a lot more on the upside," one floor trader said. A wave of fund buying and short-covering swept prices out of negative territory on Tuesday afternoon during a heated $50 rally, but it left the market overbought, with the 14-day RSI at 78 on Wednesday. Copper supplies are tight and LME stocks fell by 1,125 tonnes on Wednesday, resuming sizeable drawdowns after a modest decline of 475 tonnes on Tuesday. Supply is also under threat, with labour problems dogging operations in Chile. Borrowing boosted spreads, with the benchmark cash/threes moving out to a $80 backwardation from $70/$75 on Tuesday evening and $50 on Tuesday morning. At the end of the kerb it was indicated at $72/$82. Interest was shown in nearby dates as well as in forwards extending to the first quarter of 1998. The July/August spread was one pocket of tightness at about a $48 backwardation, and threes/October traded at a $90 backwardation. Aluminium was also helped by borrowing, tightening the cash/threes from a $19 contago on Tuesday afternoon to $14. "I think someone is short in July and just needed to cover," a floor trader said. Three month prices recovered, regaining the key $1,650 technical area and breaching the 10-day moving average at $1,661 to hit $1,668. It ended the kerb $13 higher at $1,660. Several analysts had expected prices to test support at $1,637 or even $1,616. Resistance is pegged at $1,680, the top of its recent range. Lead shot higher, breaking out of a price band and hitting the highest level since April 10. Prices touched $648 after one broker began buying in a market that had been lacklustre, catching players on the hop and triggering stops above $640. It ended the morning at $645, up $25 or four percent. Zinc added to Tuesday's gains, bettering the May 15 recent peak by $1 at $1,359. It ended the session $5 up from Tuesday at $1,358. The upside may be capped by an overbought market, with the 14-day RSI at 73, analysts said. Nickel showed little enthusiasm to stray very far, holding in a narrow range and finishing $10 firmer at $7,700. Tin was very quiet, last indicated at $5,780/90, little different from Tuesday's $5,790. Alloy finished $5 firmer at $1,510/15.
