Zinc also scored fresh gains, but most other metals were content to oscillate at recent levels. Three months copper briefly hit its $2,530 peak in the first ring, after a surprise attack during the last minutes of the pre-market by speculators gunning for stops above $2,520, traders said. The $2,520/30 resistance area is sensitive technically, since as prices move into it, many players sell into the strength, but they also have stops above, one floor trader said. The premium of cash over three months hit $100 in the first ring, compared to $80/$85 on Wednesday evening, but by the end of the kerb had eased to $88/92. The July/October spread was in demand and traded at a $150 backwardation. The market was able to stake out fresh gains partly because forward producer selling seen in recent days largely dried up, another trader said. A third floor trader said the market would have to close above $2,525 on Thursday evening or it would find itself under pressure in the run-up to the long holiday weekend which sees the LME closed MOnday. Many analysts say the market needs consolidation or a correction to let off steam from an overbought condition which has sent the 14-day RSI soaring to 80. Zinc skated to the highest level since September 1992 as trade buying boosted prices to a peak of $1,363. A stocks decline of 3,800 tonnes was supportive, and prices held most their gains, finishing the morning $10 higher at $1,360. Like copper, zinc is showing signs of being overbought, with the 14-day RSI at nearly 73. Support is pegged at $1,332 and $1,324. Aluminium struggled before giving in to selling pressure, ending the kerb with a $11 loss at $1,341. If nearby support of $1,634/7 fails to hold, the market was likely to take a look at the next floor at $1,616, analysts said. The cash/threes spread, however, narrowed by $2 to a $12/$10 contango in the second ring compared to Wednesday evening. Nickel edged lower, but found support just above the 30-day moving average at $7,518 and bounced slightly. Last kerb business was $40 firmer at $7,600. Lead consolidated recent gains and added $5 to $642. Tin attracted little interest and ended barely changed at $5,760/70 compared to $5,755. Alloy was quiet at $1,495/500 versus $1,500 on Wednesday.
