Merino fleece was dearer, with 19/20/23/24 microns up one percent, 21m up 1.5 percent, 22m up to 2.5 percent dearer, 25m 0.5 percent dearer and 26m slightly dearer. Merino skirtings of 19/20m were up to two percent dearer and 21m one percent dearer. In crossbreds, 27/29/30/31m were unchanged, with 28m slightly dearer. Cardings were generally unchanged. WI said Japanese interests including China were principal buyers with strong support from local mills and most other sectors. Of the 19,633 bales offered in Sydney and Adelaide, 6.5 percent were passed in. In early Fremantle selling, merino fleece of 20m was 1.5 percent dearer, 21m two percent dearer, and 22/23/24m one percent dearer. The early pass-in rate was 26 percent on an offering of 16,023 bales. But some new orders were noted as cautious covering of future needs came into the market ahead of the summer holiday period. Merinos retained a firmer tone reflecting the trend in Australian markets last week while carpet wools saw good demand, some of it at lower prices.
