Buying interest from the retail end and further down the manufacturing and processing line had revived to a limited and cautious extent when Australian prices were rising two weeks ago. Finer merinos led the way in the rise but also eased erratically and more sharply last week. The feeling locally is that, with only a few weeks to go before the end of the season, there is not much chance of persuading buyers to move unless they have definite committments to cover. Despite a recovery of the housing market in the London area the carepet sector is by no means bouyant, and it is otherwise a matter of waiting for consumer demand to push business through at prices very reluctantly raised from highly competitive levels. 151035 MET may 97
