Turnover in most metals was middling, however, with most of Europe closed for Whit Monday. Speculative money entered the three months nickel market as stops were hit above $7,900 per tonne, traders said. Over the past few days selling had come in around $7,850, but when a player tried the upside this morning the way was clear, traders said. The market touched $7,950, the highest since March 24, but ran into selling and finished the morning kerb $70 stronger at $7,890. The market has had a nice retracement, falling back to $7,110 last month from a peak of $8,325 hit in early March, and seems to be on the upswing again, traders added. The upcoming May 31 expiry of the labour contract at Inco's huge Sudbury operation is underpinning the market and stocks are expected to keep falling. Inventories slipped by 234 tonnes on Monday after declining by 750 tonnes last week. Copper dipped on the pre-market to $2,461, but after "Third Wednesday" pricing it had another go at the upside during kerb trading, finishing the morning $10 firmer at $2,476. The market was still tight and stocks have begun eroding again, but upside scope was seen limited in the short-term since overbought signals were being given off. The premium of cash over three months metal was little changed at $77/$82. Zinc shrugged off a 12,200-tonnes net stocks increase, ending the morning only $4 weaker at $1,344. It was unclear what was behind the build in inventories at the St. Louis LME warehouse, with some traders believing the metal was of South American origin and others saying it was European metal that was shipped out about five weeks ago. Zinc is also a bit overheated according to technical signals and some traders said it was due for a correction after hitting a fresh high of $1,358 on Thursday. Aluminium shed $7.50 to $1,659, but held to a narrow $9 trading range. More consolidation, or even a dip, was needed before prices could rechallenge the $1,700 area once again, analysts said. The cash/threes spread widened slightly, trading at a $21 contango, but finished the morning at $20/$18, only $1 wider than Friday evening. Tin was lazy, ending the session unchanged after trading in a tiny $10 band, while lead also held to its recent range, losing $5 to $625. Alloy was last traded at $1,512, down modestly from $1,515/17. FRANCUSKA BURZA - 16. svibnja 1997. - burza nije radila BAKAR FFR/100 KG 1424 KOSITAR FFR/100 KG 3871 CINK EL.
