They expect the U.S. Department of Agricutlure report to show new sales between 50,000 and 70,000 bales in both the old and new crops. "I have a feeling the numbers will be friendly, which may help to rally the market," a dealers said. Earlier in the week, the USDA pegged exports at 7.3 million 480-lb bales for the 1997/98 crop. Exports for the current crop are expected to reach 7.0 million bales. The most-active July contract ended 0.03 cent weaker at 72.30 cents per lb, after trading in a narrow range between 72.40 to 72.05 cents. New-crop December finished 0.13 cent firmer at 74.61 cents. Trade was estimated at a light 4,000 lots compared with Tuesday's official 4,431 lots. Early speculative selling between 72.10 and 72.15 cents in July caused the market to weaken early, but scale-down buying by the trade held July over its downside target of 72.00 cents, dealers said. They said a move below support could trigger stops and pressure the contract to its lifetime low of 71.00 cents. "But it seems to be holding, which is somewhat important technically," a traders said, adding that buy stops were triggered at 72.00 and 72.00 cents in Monday's rally.
