Heavy rain in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland appeared likely to reduce Australia's 1996/97 cotton crop, manager grower services of Namoi Cotton Cooperative, David Lindsay said on Friday. Analyst Judy Ganes of Merrill Lynch said the news from Australia, coupled with talk of a 100,000 bale sale by the U.S. to Mexico, slightly supported the market. March cotton settled 0.11 cent weaker at 73.10 cents per pound after trading from 73.80 to 73.02 cents. Much of the activity focused on squaring books ahead of the long weekend and funds rolling forward their positions. Volume was estimated at 7,000 lots compared to Thursday's hefty 18,578 lots. NYCE is closed Monday for Presidents Day, a U.S. public holiday, and reopens Tuesday. 171535 MET feb 97
