Some of the weaker memebers of the metals complex finished the morning session in negative territory after the market came off its highs. "There's really not any good business around at the moment to give it direction," one floor trader said. Three months copper surged in pre-market activity on commission house and Far Eastern buying to a high of $2,390, but ran into selling before it could attack $2,400. It drifted lower during the rings and ended the morning kerb little changed at $2,369 per tonne, up $1. Support was expected at $2,355, $2,322 and $2,305. Stock figures would be closely watched on Tuesday to see if more copper moves from Singapore into China after 6,175 tonnes took that route last week. The premium of cash over three months metal surged $12 to $67/69. One trader said several players went long on Friday to take advantage of a technical situation by which weekend positions would gain due to the backwardation and the way prompt dates fell with the approaching long Easter weekend. Zinc followed copper higher on the pre-market, touching a high of $1,301, but lost heart when copper failed on the upside. The last trade on the morning kerb was $1,294, down $3. "There are further signs that the upwards momentum is slowing, with a negative close on the charts and the RSI falling to 71.5," said broker Brandeis in a commentary. Aluminium etched out a similar picture, joining the move higher in the morning, stretching up to $1,672, but ending with only a $5 gain at $1,662. "There has been some decent buying in aluminium. If it could hold above $1,670 we might have something there," a floor trader said. Nickel breached the $7,900 level, continuing this month's gentle downtrend, settling at $7,890, down $65. Support was pegged at $7,870, $7850 and $7,760. Chartists noted that prices remained below the 10-day and 30-day moving averages, which were converging in the $8,000 region and would offer resistance above the market. Lead broke below nearby support of $686 after last week's Chinese selling, to finish the morning with a $9 loss at $683. The current level was an important floor based on a trendline, brokers Rudolf Wolff said. "Should this level be broken, we would look for a return to the recent low at $668," it said. Tin slumped by $35 to $5,890 and alloy was last indicated at $1,550/55, little changed from Friday's $1,545/55. FRANCUSKA BURZA - 24. ožujka 1997.
