Contracts were following the patterns established late last Friday, when a copper retreat was mirrored across the whole complex, traders said. "It (the market) got a bit overcooked last Friday, it had to adjust and cool down", one said. Initial buying interest in copper did not amount to much, and prices subsequently slipped back with a possible test of downside support around $2,350 a tonne likely. "It does look a bit sloppy," another trader said. There was also some light forward lending of copper, although the cash/threes nearby backwardation remains solid around $85/90. Three months prices settled back from an early high of $2,373 to $2,366, a $24 decline from Friday's kerb close. Other metals were trading thinly and at lower levels, in line with copper. Aluminium dipped to $1,669, a $6 loss, ahead of January IPAI inventory data. But these figures were not expected to provide much impetus, due to additional statistics being included from China and Yugoslavia, they noted. Zinc eased $5 to $1,249, while nickel was $50 softer at $8,080. Tin slipped $15 to $5,905, while the quiet lead and alloy markets were quoted at $673/675 and $1,540/50 a tonne.
