Both soy and rape oil attracted demand with shippers active in soy oil while most of the business in rape oil was inter-dealer. "China has been talked about and that is quite possible bearing in mind the rise palm oil prices following the Indonesian export ban." said one trader. Dutch soy oil sellers were 0.75 guilders up to unchanged at the close after Feb traded at 129 guilders, Mar 128.50 and 129, Apr 127 and 127.50 and May/Jul 125.75 and 126 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Dutch/EU rape oil finished unchanged to 0.50 guilders down after Feb fetched 129.50 guilders, Mar 130, Aug/Oct 129.25 and Nov/Jan 122.25 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Traders said the Aug/Oct rapeoil position was very active. In the palm oil market traders seemed to be playing a wait-and-see game following the latest developments in the Indonesian palm oil export ban saga. According to reports in the Indonesian Observer, Indonesia will keep its ban on exports of crude palm oil and olein until cooking oil is affordable at the price of 3,000 rupiah per kilo in the domestic market. Indonesian traders said the price to consumers was currently a little above 3,000 rupiah. The newspaper quoted the Director General of Agricultural and Forestry Industries at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Sujata, as saying the government does not plan to lift the embargo until supplies of crude palm oil and olein were sufficient to lower the price of cooking oil to 3,000 rupiah per kilo. He said the government was determined to lower the price of cooking oil in the domestic market and it was likely the 3,000 rupiah per kilo target can be reached in the not-to-distant future. The news came as no surprise to the European market and traders said it seemed give some light at the end of the tunnel, even if it was only a candle. "This is about what we expected, but no one thinks the ban will be lifted before the election in early March," said one trader. "Most people are connived there will be some easing of the ban after the Indonesian elections and many seem quite happy with the possible 20 percent export tax given the recent fall in the value of the rupiah," said another trader. However, traders said once the ban is lifted the market will be faced with many logistical problems before the supply of palm oil settles down again. Palm oil prices closed little changed from midday although there were some additional trades reported among products. RBD palm oil fetched $625 a tonne fob Malaysian ports for Apr while Apr/Jun olein traded up to $640 and Jul/Sep up to $600 a tonne. At the close crude palm oil was unchanged to $10 up, RBD oil $10 higher, olein rose by $10 to $12.50 while stearin finished unchanged to $2.50 above Tuesday's close. Coconut oil continued to drift lower with sellers $10 to $5 down after May/Jun traded at $580 and $585 and Jun/Jul at $590 and $592.50 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil was $10 up and tradeless.
